Welcome to the Cabot School Library!
Cabot School Library

The Cabot School Library’s mission is to inspire and nurture all members of the Cabot community through access to great literature and information resources across a broad range of disciplines in a personalized, project-based environment.

The library is open every school day from 8:00 AM until 3:30 PM. It is staffed by Nene Riley, librarian, who also co-teaches Readers Writers Workshop in Grades 5-8, Stephenie Manning, and student volunteers. Stephenie arrives in the library at 9:30 from her morning work in the office, to assist with library programming, provide tech assistance to students and teachers, and manage substitutes for teacher absences. The Library Advisory Committee (LAC), a Cabot Leads team of middle school students, plays an important role in book selection and weekly staffing of the circulation desk.

Developing and maintaining the collection is a constant process that involves assessment of existing titles, knowledge of curriculum areas, and changing student tastes in reading and inquiry. Professional journal reviews and feedback from staff and students are important means of assuring the fulfillment of the library’s mission for a relevant and inspiring collection.

All PK-Grade 4 classes have a library block each week. The goals of the instructional program align with school-wide goals for information literacy and reading for pleasure. Learning activities at the primary level include author studies, participation in the Vermont Department of Libraries Red Clover program, and close reading of informational text. At the intermediate level learning activities include participation in the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award Program, book talk presentations, skill development in the inquiry process, and finding and evaluating information. Middle and high school students use the library’s print and electronic reference materials, bibliography tools, and applications for creativity, collaboration, and presentation on an as-needed basis.
